Evaluation one

Question one

My music video did mostly follow conventions of the punk rock genre, it uses similar colour schemes that are seen in videos made by evanescence for other songs, the ancillary tasks were quite conventional to the genre as well, I chose not to challenge the conventions to much in the ancillary tasks as I felt that it was the correct way to market the artist to the target audience, but I did challenge a few common conventions in the music video itself, whilst following most of them.

In the music video I chose to have the female in a white dress, after researching into the common conventions for evanescence videos,  and the male singers in dark clothing – again following conventions, however I went against the convention of the females white dress contrasting with the background as I wanted to use the colors in the shots to relay the story line within the song, like a subliminal message. By doing the song ‘bring me to life’ by evanescence I thought that it would be fitting to portray the female singer like she is in heaven, singing back to life, asking for help. By shooting on a white background and using hard lighting I feel that it successfully worked well and portrayed the image I wanted it to. With the male I decided to keep him in black and white so that he would contrast to the female singer and the rest of the music video to make it seem like he is alive. I used hard lighting in both scenes as it allowed me to define certain features and help with in camera editing; I used hard lighting on the female singer to make her skin pale in the camera, this help to portray the idea that she is dead/ in heaven. I kept the editing pace correct for the style music video and to the beats of the song and used editing techniques to enhance the video. I used a cross dissolve on most of the shots of the male singer, as most of his lines were backing lines it seemed correct to have him fading in and out of the female shots. I used a variety of shots, but predominantly used close up to mid shots, by using these shots I followed the conventions, but also challenged them in that I didn’t use extreme close ups, I didn’t feel that it would suit this song and the rest of the editing that I had used previously to the point where I thought a extreme close up could be used.
